Conference Overview:
From Vitruvius to Le Corbusier, designers and builders have been trying to “humanize” the design of spaces based on a modular unit of human scale. But does “humanizing” the built environment mean more than just designing around the human figure and geometric axioms? Are our present conceptions of the interaction of space and its perception holding us back from reimagining new forms and processes?

The health care environment must go beyond its architecture and engineering precepts to meld into its surrounding social fabric before an inanimate space can be transformed into an actualizing event that is safe, accommodating, supportive, and healing for all persons who experience it. To open our minds to new ways of thinking about old ideas, we have assembled some nationally recognized speakers who will challenge you to think anew your preconceived notions of what a viable and vibrant health care environment can be.

Dr. Bill Thomas

On Sunday afternoon, Dr. Bill Thomas, creator of the Greenhouse, will speak about the dead-end thinking of ageism that pervades our culture and explode some of society’s most sacredly held myths regarding the aging process. Then on Sunday evening, you will be treated to a magical theater event, “ChangingAging Tour 2017”. This staged event will be filled with songs, story telling, music, and facts that will open your mind to new ways of thinking about growing old in America and what it will mean to the future of long term care design in this country.

Other main speaker sessions on Monday and Tuesday will focus on the importance of how technology can help to place the patient into the center of patient centered care services, how organizations can improve staff satisfaction and change their delivery of care models, and how buildings can be interwoven into part of the solution instead of becoming merely code complying props for executing old ideas that no longer work.

The Breakaway Sessions will concentrate on health care design and construction issues related to fire safety, architectural and engineering design, and facility management that are important to designers, contractors, facility managers, and inspectors. The new revisions to the 6th edition of the Florida Building Code and the 2014 editions of the FGI Guidelines will be the new code standards at the end of this year. There will be plenty of sessions to get you ready for all the changes. The two FGI Guideline books, (one for hospital and one for residential design) will be available for purchase at a discounted price.

The AHCA Office of Plans and Construction review staff and the Fire Protection Specialists from AHCA's field offices will be in attendance to answer questions regarding AHCA's interpretations and applications of these and other codes and standards enforced by CMS and the state of Florida.

Programs and Agendas:
This year we are kicking off the seminar with “Casual Sunday” so come in shorts and sandals for an afternoon of educational sessions and entertainment.
