Anica Landreneau

Director of Sustainable Design at HOK

As director of sustainable design at HOK, Anica has devoted her career to high-performance, sustainable design. Based in Washington, D.C., she advises on green design across HOK and leads the firm’s AIA 2030 commitment toward a carbon-neutral portfolio. She is a member of the firm’s board of directors and global design board.

Anica is a leader in making Washington, D.C., one of the world’s greenest cities. She is serving

her second term on the District of Columbia Green and Energy Codes TAG, authoring high performance building codes, and is in her second term on the Mayor’s Green Building Advisory Council. Anica serves on the LEED Advisory Committee, the AIA National Codes and Standards Committee and the AIA Blue Ribbon Panel on Codes. She also is on the Consultative Council for the National Institute of Building Sciences and leads HOK’s partnerships with BREEAM USA, Delos/International WELL Building Institute and the International Finance Corporation EDGE green building program. A frequent author and speaker on sustainable design. Anica is a graduate of the University of Houston, which lists her as one of its prominent alumni.

Senior Associate Director of Sustainability for the American Society for Health Care Engineering of the American Hospital Association

Session Title: Decarbonization in Health Care – Trends and Perspectives

Kara Brooks, directs strategic leadership, advocacy, and program development for the association’s sustainability initiatives. Kara has more than 20 years of environmental sustainability and energy engineering experience. She serves on numerous national panels and committees, developing codes and standards for the health care built environment.

Kara has a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Master of Science degree in Business Management both from Colorado State University. She is an active member of ASHRAE and the Association of Energy Engineers, and serves on the US Department of Energy’s Better Buildings Alliance Healthcare Steering Committee.

She is a Health Care Environmental Sustainability and Decarbonization Professional.

Dr. Jeff Thompson

CEO Gundersen Health System 2001-2015

Dr. Thompson led Gundersen Health System as CEO from 2001–15. During that time, Thompson led a team at Gundersen that implemented an electronic health record system and expanded care for patients with mental illness. Thompson and his team’s holistic approach to health care also involved Gundersen making strategic investments in the community and putting Gundersen at the forefront of environmentally responsible health care institutions—in 2014 Gundersen became the first health facility to produce more energy than it consumed, running entirely on renewable sources.

All that innovation came out of an approach to leadership that put an emphasis on creating a culture of problem solving and defining the organization’s values and staying true to them. “What he provides that is somewhat unique in the leadership world is a real emphasis on building a good culture and knowledge on how to do that,” Kyte said. “He’s got the leadership experience with Gundersen, but he’s also been a student of leadership, and his book, Lead True: Live Your Values, Build Your People, Inspire Your Community has been so well-received, in fact, that since it was published in 2017, he’s traveled the world speaking on a variety of leadership topics, from health care to business management to climate change. He’s presented talks at Harvard University and the Aspen Institute’s, Aspen Ideas Festival and has shared his ideas on incorporating green practices in health care in locales including Denver, San Diego, Washington, D.C., China, Brazil, and the Netherlands."

Senior Vice President at Hanson

Bill Bradford is a senior vice president and serves as Hanson's energy, sustainability and resiliency principal. He joined Hanson as a mechanical engineer in 1986 and has provided the mechanical systems design for a wide range of projects — including hospitals, laboratories, federal and state prisons, jails and courthouses — as well as numerous projects for private industry. He has served as government and energy market principal, as well as principal-in-charge for a variety of continuing services contracts for federal and state government agencies. As a client liaison, he

works to provide ongoing communication, monitor and maintain client satisfaction and conduct ongoing project reviews. He has served as principal or principal-in-charge for various programs and contracts, including the Worldwide Commissioning Contract for the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations; the commissioning of more than 70 K-12 schools for Orange County Public Schools (9th largest school district in the United States) as a result of its construction program; commissioning of a $1.5 billion expansion of the Hard Rock Casino and Hotel in Hollywood, Florida; a data center for the HiPerGator supercomputer at the University of Florida’s East Campus in Gainesville and the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto; development of energy roadmaps (strategic plans) for Orlando International Airport and multiple Florida Hospital campuses; and design contracts for many private, state and local government entities throughout Florida.

In addition to his work responsibilities, Bill is active in professional organizations and in the community. He is a participating member of the International Committee and the Energy and Environment Committee for the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC). In Florida, he is the energy director and chair of the Energy Committee for ACEC-Florida. He has served on the board of trustees for Palm Beach Atlantic University since 1989 and as chair of the Florida Hospital Altamonte Foundation Board in Central Florida. He previously served as the Chair of the Intracoastal Hospitals Associate Board in South Florida.

With a diverse engineering and project management background, Wade is an expert in the design, troubleshooting, and optimization of HVAC systems. He is responsible for design review, submittal review, developing commissioning plans, functional tests, and performance tests for project commissioning. For over 15 years of his career, he has provided energy audits, retro-commissioning, and re-commissioning services for existing buildings, including energy modeling, life cycle costs analysis, and economic analysis.

For the last 16 years, I’ve had the privilege of doing meaningful work, working with exceptional clients and partners. As an Electrical Engineer and Principal at Mazzetti, I specialize in the design of electrical distribution, power, renewables, lighting, telecommunications, fire alarm systems, and coordination with architects and other disciplines. I really enjoy leading teams — coordinating and coaching to achieve a successful project. My team has had the honor to participate on

landmark projects, including the $1B+ LEED Platinum Packard Children’s Hospital and on various projects for portfolio clients like UCSF, Kaiser Permanente and Stanford Health Care. My energy efficiency work for Packard Children’s Hospital in Palo Alto, California, was highlighted in this EC&M article. For this $1.2 billion expansion – adding 521,000 square feet of floor space and more than 3.5 acres of healing gardens and green space – we used a low-velocity displacement air distribution system for patient rooms and other spaces, requiring lower horsepower fans and lowering cooling production.

As the Healthcare sector is urgently driving towards carbon neutrality, I take my role seriously to support environmental stewardship. Towards this, in addition to advising clients, I’ve had the opportunity to participate in demonstration projects, measuring the performance and reliability of microgrids — literally powering the future of Healthcare! Electrical engineering even spills into my volunteer work. I have done a load analysis for a school for children of migrant workers in Ensenada, Mexico, and recommended a phased approach to building a power generation system.

Ed Mazria

CEO Architecture 2030

Ed Mazria, FAIA is  the winner of the AIA Gold Medal 2021. The Gold Medal is the AIA’s highest annual honor, recognizing individuals whose work has had a lasting influence on the theory and practice of architecture.

His architecture and renewable energy research at both UNM and the University of Oregon established his leadership in the field of resource conservation and passive heating, cooling and daylighting design. His design methodology, developed at that time and presented in The Passive Solar Energy Book, is currently in use worldwide.

Session Title: Architecture 2030.                                                                                        

Since forming the architecture and planning firm Mazria Associates, Inc. in 1978, he has completed award-winning architecture and planning projects from the day-lit Mt. Airy Public Library in North Carolina to the Rio Grande Botanic Garden Conservatory in New Mexico.

 

Mazria closed his architecture practice in 2006 and is currently the Founder and CEO of Architecture 2030, a think tank developing real-world solutions for 21st century problems including the AIA+2030 Professional Education Series, 2030 Palette, China Accord, and the 2030 Districts movement in North American cities. He developed the “Roadmap to Zero Emissions” and is currently working with cities across the U.S. to develop pathways for “zero” to “80%” greenhouse gas emissions reductions by 2050.
